Vesaas spent most of his life writing and living at his home farm, where he died in March 15, 1970. As with his poetry, Vesaas moved to a more realist approach in his stories. In the 40’s Vesaas started to focus mostly on writing poetry, and began with the more traditionalist style, but moved later to a more modernist style. In 1945 Vesaas wrote HUSET I MØRKRET, House in the Dark, which was about Norway’s struggle against the invasion by Germany. These were tied closely to the Nynorsk literature (one of the two official languages of Norway). Vesaas started his writing early in the 1920’s when he published his first works, MENNESKEBONN (1923), SENDEMANN HUSKULD (1924) and GUDS BUSTADER (1925). In 1917 to 18 he went to folk high school where he was educated, then traveled abroad, mostly Germany, from 1920 to 27 when he returned home. He is from a farmer family, with a long history in the area, where his family home had been passed from father to son for three centuries.

“Tarjei Vesaas has written the best Norwegian novel ever, The Birds- it is absolutely wonderful, the prose is so simple and so subtle, and the story is so moving that it would have been counted amongst the great classics from the last century if it had been written in one of the major languages.” - Karl Ove Knausgaard
